The client told me that I have complete and utter control and that I could do “anything I wanted.” As a bead of sweat appeared at my temple and my throat went dry…I embraced the opportunity.

Usually I’ll design a couple of different ideas and develop the one the client prefers, but for this client I had full range!

I was planning to do an abstract pattern, and keep it really loose. I had the client have fun and help me lay down the purple backdrop. As I started adding the green swath of paint, he said he had one request: could I paint his favorite flower, the tiger lily?

Oh my goodness, of course! So I painted the one flower, and then slowly a garden began to grow. I added forsythias, tiger lilies, poppies, and hibiscus. I had sooo much fun doing this one for a lot of reasons. The client truly trusted me and encouraged me to explore my creativity.

I tried a different style called “active painting,” which incorporates my whole body. I danced with paint brushes to make marks, threw paint soaked sponges against the wall, and used a hose to create a layered watery, dripping effect.

My Crayola color palette

Throwing paint soaked sponges! Note that I had the tarp to protect the concrete pavers, but the client asked me to remove it so that the paint splatters and stains would extend onto the floor. He truly embraced the creative process and I will forever be grateful.

Just finished the backdrop color!

I love when my nails become their own work of art!

I love getting messy :)
